When I first got to St Louis, I got a severe beating. It took me 4 hours to clear the map with one sniper rifle and Farsight, because none of my squad could use big guns. The last time I played it this was not a problem. But being an RPG, you could try to play through the later game with just HTH or sniper characters. I agree that the first 6 missions are the best.
